Individual guest reviews

The castle is very authentic, the home farm cottage was a great size, well-equipped with everything you need for self-catering and clean, and the surrounding countryside is beautiful. The staff were very friendly and accommodating.

This is the kind of historical atmosphere, combined with luxurious service - great food, lovely attention to detail throughout - that makes it really worth paying the extra - even the garden had some interesting plants - an extra for me ;-))

I liked the old period feel of the place; unlike other more upmarket castles it was relaxed and not stuffy or formal. The staff were friendly and efficient, the dining room was beautiful and the entrance stairs very impressive. The garden was lovely to walk in after dinner. I would stay there again if I was in the area.

Considering it was high season there were very few staff about the place and no sense that someone was in charge of looking after everything. The room I was in had a lovely view but the decor was very battered - it looked worn, the armchairs were very uncomfortable and the lighting poor for reading unless you were in bed. The bed itself was past its best but the linen was clean and comfortable. The room and bathroom (and presumably the other rooms) need to be looked over by somebody with an eye for period furnishings and decor.

Markree Castle was exceptionally quiet, the grounds and the hotel were peaceful and relaxed.

There seemed to be very few staff which gave it more of a bed and breakfast feel than a fully functioning hotel feel.

I enjoyed the location an the overall set up though I think it needs a lot of restoration work. The receptionist was very helpfull - a Polish chap .No vegitables at dinner only potatoes unless you ask, is a bit strange.! Think it could be very cold in winter. Very convenient to Sligo and a lovely setting. Could be beautiful

I loved staying in a castle that oozed charm and history. The building was amazing, especially the entrance.

Great building and atmosphere ruined by the existing staff. I have never in my life met staff with such a bad attitude. Not only were they sullen, but the groaned and rolled their eyes and carried on if they were asked anything. The castle was grossly understaffed and it was a very long wait for anything such as a a drink in the bar or a hot chocolate. What appealed to me was the roaring fire that was advertised. It was freezing the night we went and the building was really cold. By the time we had tea we were snap frozen. We thought the fire would be roaring but it was all but out. The staff refused to get it going, so I personally spent the next hour painstakingly reviving it.There was no kindly left and only a tiny bit of wood. Staff got extremely stroppy when asked for more wood. I finally got it roaring and had all the guests huddled in front of it, but was then told we couldn't have any more wood so we all had to go to bed at 10:30!!

The atmosphere was terrific. It was like going back in time. Rooms were very spacious and bathroom facilities were very good. the experience of eating in the dining room evening and breakfast was very good.

Was a little difficult to find as sat nav co-ordinates took us to a site about 2 miles from the castle.

The building itself. Its not over-renovated. It has rstic charm in buckets

    Food was excellent

Staff were enthusiastic but totally amateur ; no price on menu / no idea of what final bill could be ; dining room staff staff speaking hardly any english is bad enough - not knowing how to open a bottle of wine or how to serve is not acceptable ; the shower control in the bathroom didn't function - so you froze or risked being boiled; the double bed was tiny and hard , and there was no blackout curtain ...so the castle floodlighting illuminated the bedroom well into the night; The cost for Dinner , B&B reflected a hotel with facilities anf a trained staff ....unfortunately not our experience in Markree.

The whole experience was fabulous from the staff right down to the general ambience. We thoroughly enjoyed it and would go back in a heartbeat. There is so much to see even just in the castle itself. It felt like we were the only people there. Absolutely fantastic.

The only little and it's a very tiny niggle I'd have is that when dining as a smoker I had to go up and down flights of stairs to go outside. So not funny in very high heels and an out of place pelvis. I do know it's my problem and it's the only minute criticism I had otherwise brilliant.

The breakfast choice was disappointing for the money

Markree is an impressive castle building set in wonderful and expansive grounds. I went horseriding on two days and it was such a pleasure to ride through rivers, forests and open land with an abundance of wildlife. The hotel is charming, not perfect, but so much more enjoyable than your standard ergonomicaly designed international hotel. The rooms are old, spacious but charming. My room had a problem with hit water but the receptionist dealt with it very well.. Offered me a move to a less nice room but then also offered that I could just use the new room for showering and stay where I was. All in all it's a different experience and you definately feel like you are away... Log fires, countryside, stately home and shabby chic,

Coffee and orange juice at breakfast.... Both need to be fresh.
